Blog Post #153: Sanju Samson and the power of 89!

Indian Cricket team won the T20 World Cup over this weekend and created history by winning this twice in a row and also broke few more records.

Couple of players stood out for Team India during this tournament and Sanju Samson scripted an amazing turnaround story by playing winning knocks against Windies (virtual quarterfinals), England in the semis and NZ in the Grand finale. He scored 97, 89, 89 in those three innings powering India to a famous win and so dedicating my next Maths blog to Sanju "Classy" Samson!

1. To begin with 89 is a prime number and it could be just a coincidence that he ended up with the same score in both semis and finals

2. 89 ^ 2 is 7921 and when we add 79 and 21 we get a perfect hundred! Yes - Samson may not have reached a milestone in both these matches but those scores worth more than a century

3. The number 89 is part of the famous Fibonacci series! - 0, 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21, 34, 55, 89

4. 89 can be represented in the form of X ^ Y and Y ^ X together (The digit 8 is 2 ^ 3 while 9 is 3 ^ 2)

5. In Mathematics and Number theory world, the number is famously known for the famous "89 Loop" - Start with any number and add the sum of the squares of the digits, repeat this and we will end up with 89!!

E.g Let's start 36 - 3 ^ 2 + 6 ^ 2 = 45, Now 4 ^ 2 + 5 ^ 2 =  41, 4 ^ 2 + 1 ^ 2 = 17, 1^ 2 + 7 ^ 2 = 50, 5 ^ 2 + 0 ^ 2 = 25, 2 ^ 2 + 5 ^ 2 = 29, 2 ^ 2 + 9 ^ 2 = 85, 8 ^ 2 + 5 ^ 2 = 89. Now the next in this series are 89, 145, 42, 20, 4, 16, 37, 58, 89!!!

6. His other score apart from 89 was 97 which is also a prime number! Clearly a prime reason why Sanju Samson's scores in this World Cup are so special and 89 turns out to be his lucky charm
